Another turkey update from the hill. :)
For some unknown reason we've had a jake hanging out along the road down by the gate for a few days now. He sits about 2 ft. off the road kinda like a canadian goose. My girlfriend who'd been naming all the polts thought it was either a mom turkey who'd lost her kids or a turkey who'd lost it's mate.
:uplaugh: :hah hah :uplaugh:
(picture me now speechless with laughter)
The rest of the workday went something like this.....Quick !!! call the butterball hotline an tell them we found their bird! Wait....tell them we got a defective one!! ( we know it's defective cause it hasn't been shrinkwrapped  )
Turkeys don't mate for life!!! ROFLMAO !!!
Girl turkeys don't have blue heads!! BWAHAAHAAHAAHAA!!!!!!!
Yeah....we know what it's waiting for....to get hit by the school bus!!!
The damn thing is hanging out on a blind bend....it's gona be a flat-bird.
It's gonna be doing it's dance when WHAM!!!
Last but our fav....we know what it's doing.....volunteering for thanksgiving!!!!
Tomorrow we're gona put out some feed corn for the silly thing....to lure it up into the field. Wouldn't want 20 little kids crying as they scrape it off the front of the bus.

My answer would be filling its gizzard with gravel to digest its food. I see them often eating gravel, but the normally don't stay long exposed to danger.

Maybe you ought to chase that jake around a little bit or harass him just enough to teach him to be cautious.

So far my best "housewife" guess is he was sniffing around the field on the other side of the road where we've heard the other Jake callin' but he stays hid. An the older one drove the younger one off...
cause he was trollin for gurls.
Or this new one is just suicidal !!....Bubs, didn't see him scratching for gravel....just camping along the side of the road. Like a lawn ornament.

ahhhhh its fair all right exspecialy sitting on the kitchen table with some stuffing and patatoes, mmmmmmm yep + your doing turkey a favor as this one must be short on brain power and will not last the winter thus more food for the rest , now if he is going to be a pet ???? weeeeelllllll then thats another story as turkey days still a ways off and he can be fattened up some MMMMMMMMMM

Sounds like rationalization. For whatever reason this jake acts out of the usual turkey behavior. Don't try to right that behavior; take advantage of an easy kill and attribute this act as a favor to the species.

are you hungry ????
will you use the meat ???
is this the way of it ? yep , only the strong will servive,,, if you were a coyote would you think twice about killing this bird if he just stood there ? nope ithink not . our problem is we think we are above nature and we are not .
if you dont need the meat then do the bird a favor and scare the hell out of him ,,, maybe he will remember it and save you life someday

Cool...a solid vote for stupidity!! :wow:
We tried to feed this poor excuse for a wiley bird....an sort of drove him up towards the other band of gurls in the upper field.
The squirrels now chowing down on cracked corn....along the road.
Ever have just one of those days?
Hopefully the rest of the gurls don't notice he's on the puny side...or not too bright either...
We'd considered a blanket-party for him...but my co-worker still thinks he needs a chance. So we got the Support-Specialist all excited about plucking for absolutely no reason.
(she's a whiz at it!!)
He was last seen tagging along after some polts trying to keep up.
Pathetic really...
:)
but entertaining

I pluck 'em - do you all pluck 'em or skin 'em.
#6's, full choke, 12 ga. - works great.
Gut 'em, pick 'em up and sling over shoulder and get back home.
hang and pluck- put a half a pot of coffee on - radio - its gonna take 30- 45 mins
Before you pluck- start the deep fryer up- heat that oil...
pluck bird clean, clean plucked bird, hang in fryer - 20-30 mins - depending on size of bird
wallah! oooh its so good!
