Tuscarora word of the day: BEADWORK

oo?teeksteh

this is the best I can do without a font. Later I will just scan the words in the proper fonts and attach a pronunciation key.. but for now, the question mark will represent the sound between the vowels in unh-unh.

Tuscarora word for the day: EAT
spelled= rachu.rih
Phonetically =raa-choo-dee

I've been learning this one off one of the tapes as well. It's nice having the spelling to go with it because the way howard's recording sounds.. one moment it sounds like rachudih and another moment..rachulih.

Hey Jolie,

It's my understanding that verbs cannot stand by themselves. At least from the tapes with Howard Hill, he always helps conjugate what each one is. I believe the word thah?choohreeh means YOU EAT.

HE EATS rah?chooreeh
SHE EATS yeh?chooreeh

Let me know if that is what you understand as well. I could certainly be wrong, but let me know what you know!

You know.. I don't really know. I was going by both the tape and the dictionary..but that's a great point you bring up and probably very right! In fact your spelling IS right LOL.. but when you got your copy of this you'll know what i'm saying... and it does'nt help that I have bad hearing either.. sniff

Jolie,

I know what you mean about the hearing...some of the tapes are just really tough to hear the information. Also, Howard doesn't always conjugate everything. Sometimes he just provides the verb. It makes it tough to decipher!!!

I don't think any of those words are bad; it's just the modern American connotation or English interpretation that changes the meaning.

In Ojibwe the word for breast is dodoosh; the word for milk is dodooshabo. The -abo suffix means it is a liquid or something to drink. Nothing bad in either of those words. Although only milk is taught to students.

I think it's just our preschool based humor that finds saying body part names funny... kinda like you can still get most guys to laugh just by saying poop.

egad..not sure how to type this phonetically.. but it is the sound of liquid being swallowed or a gulp.
k=g
u=oo
?= glotteral stop
r= this sound is confusing...according to the key, it should be a SS sound like in hiss.. but it could very well be a simple rrrr sound as in run.

You know, I had a thought... I was thinking about how my guinea pigs' name is Ko-ko-thih but it's not pronounced as COCOA THIGH, ... K sound is like a cross between K and G, very glotteral. So it's pronounced, gkoh gkoh thi. I know with some of the words we use in tuscarora you hear people say nya-weh, while others say it more like now ah.... and I remember growing up hearing it Nyow ah.. I'm not sure exactly which is more correct, but I was thinking syllables like T which are normally said to be pronounced as D could be a combination of the two... such as Oh:ta.. when you are a kid it almost sounds like saying OAT Duh... and C is pronounced as CHee but has a bit of a T sound to it like Tch...
I started thinking about this because of my kids' spelling homework we did with her last night. What do you all think?
